But What are the causes for acne and pimples?

Contrary to many beliefs, pimples are not only caused by the kinds of foods you eat, exercise or lack of it or how you wash your body.

In fact, pimples are at most times caused by psychological effects way beyond your control. It is no wonder that despite your efforts to eat the right foods and frequent the gym, pimples have always been your bed fellows.

Now that you know, let’s delve into what causes zits.

Bacteria

Bacteria exist in your skin. They are part of the skin system to keep it functional. However, the problem comes when follicles are plugged. Then follows rigorous bacteria reaction on the affected area. The end result is a pimple.

Hormones

For those at puberty, androgen is the hormone responsible for all those blemishes on your once smooth baby skin. Normally androgen leads to enlarged sebaceous glands, which is normal to body development. But in some cases, androgen crosses its limit and overly stimulates the glands leading to continued bout of zits. This can go on into adulthood.

Clogging of pores

The number one cause of acne is clogged pores. Excess sebum produced as a result of stimulation by androgen find its way to the skin surface. There it mixes with dead skin and bacteria. The mixture forms obstruction over the skin pores hence the resulting pimples.

Inflammation

Every time you have an inflammation it always leaves that sad, often painful bump on your skin. But you have never known why this always happens. Here is the simple explanation. To every bacteria intrusion, an army of white blood cells are send to that specific area. The response is so abrupt and rigorous that the skin is left with zits. These kinds of pimples are red and very painful.

Stress

It is no brainier that people who are often stressed will always have pimples as a reminder of their tumultuous life. Stress causes the skin to break out hence easy for zit to form.

How to prevent acne and pimples from returning?

Avoid picking at the pimples

This is one bad habit which acne-prone people tend to develop. They pull out the scabs on the pimples thinking they are doing a favor to their skin. However, picking and touching the skin spreads the bacteria around. So try and avoid touching your face.

Change your pillow covers

This natural remedy for pimples is especially recommended for women and men who get pimples only on one side of their face. It may be because of dirty pillowcases and covers. If you have not washed your sheets and covers, it is time you do so. If possible, change the entire pillow and replace it with a new pillow and cover. As far as possible, use satin or silk pillow-covers as these are least abrasive to the skin. The same is true with head scarves. If you use one, makes sure you wash it from time to time. Also use a silk scarf when needed.

Could it be allergies?

Pimples can be attributed to many factors: stress, hormones, diet and lifestyle. If you have not had pimples before but are suddenly fighting them, then it could be due to a change in your diet, medicines etc. So try and watch what you eat. If you are taking medicines like oral contraceptives etc talk to your doctor whether they could be cause of your pimples. If needed, keep a food diary and try eliminating foods one at a time. Then watch out what leads to pimple flare-ups. This is the best possible way of eliminating pimples once and for all naturally.

Have a bowel movement daily

Constipation leads to toxin accumulation which reflects on the skin. If you are not eating enough fiber, you might not have a bowel movement daily and this could lead to skin eruptions. So make sure you are regular by having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Avoid taking laxatives as these lead to chemical dependence. Instead, rely on natural remedies like prunes, raisins and dates etc to ensure having a bowel movement each morning. If possible, start your day with a glass of hot water to which you add some honey, lemon juice and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. This will push down the feces and prevent constipation. Drink plenty of water as stated above.

Check your cosmetics and makeup products

Makeup, cosmetics and even your shampoo could lead to acne. So check to see if these products are triggering the acne. Change your shampoo if you are getting acne on the forehead. Always opt for non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested products. If you have sensitive skin, avoid using makeup completely. Make sure you also clean your makeup brushes from time to time.

The good and bad of sunshine

Moderate sun exposure can help your skin get Vitamin D- the sunshine vitamin which is essential for healthy skin. But you must strictly avoid the sun during peak summers between 10 am to 4 pm when the UV A and UV B rays are harshest. Use a non-comedogenic sunscreen with at least SPF 30+. Go for natural sun-block containing Zinc Oxide. Use a wide brimmed hat or a scarf to protect your face. If you are swimming, reapply the sunscreen every two hours.

Take a multivitamin and mineral supplement

Healthy skin needs certain vitamins like Vitamins A, B complex, vitamin C and E as well as minerals like Zinc. You must also take Omega 3 essential fatty acids found abundantly in walnuts, fish etc. As stated before, drink plenty of water and eat many colorful fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
